The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) conducts various competitive exams for the recruitment of candidates into different government positions in the state of Bihar, India. Step 1. Preliminary Examination

    • The first stage of most BPSC exams is the preliminary examination, also known as the BPSC Prelims.
    • The preliminary exam consists of objective-type questions (multiple-choice questions/ MCQs) covering subjects like History, Geography, Polity, Economy, General Science, Bihar-specific knowledge, Current Affairs, General Mental Abilities and more.
    • There will be a One-third negative marking for each wrong answers.
    • The purpose of this stage is to shortlist candidates for the next round (Written Examination/ Mains) based on their performance.

 

Step 2. Mains Examination

    • Candidates who qualify in the preliminary exam move on to the main examination, also known as the BPSC Mains.
    • The main exam is more comprehensive and includes both subjective and objective questions.
    • The main exam typically consists of 5 papers –
      • General Hindi* (100 Marks, Qualifying in nature, 30% marks is required)
      • General Studies P-1 (300 Marks)
      • General Studies P-2 (300 Marks)
      • Essay (300 Marks)
      • Optional Paper* (100 Marks, Qualifying in nature)
    • The main exam assesses the depth of candidates’ knowledge, their ability to understand the situation and represent their knowledge according to the demand and their ability to express themselves effectively.

Step 3. Interview (Personality Test):

    • Candidates who perform well in the main exam are shortlisted for the interview stage, also known as the Personality Test.
    • The interview assesses candidates’ personality traits, communication skills, leadership abilities, and overall suitability for the position.
    • Questions in the interview can cover a wide range of topics, including general knowledge, current affairs, and the candidate’s academic and professional background.

 

Step 4. Final Merit List:

    • Based on the performance in the main examination and the interview, a final merit list is prepared.
    • The final merit list ranks candidates according to their scores and performance in the main exam and interview.

 

Step 5. Document Verification:

    • Candidates who are included in the final merit list are called for document verification.
    • Candidates are required to provide proof of their Educational qualifications, Caste Certificates (if applicable), Residence, and other relevant documents.

 

Medical Examination (if applicable):

    • Depending on the nature of the position, candidates might need to undergo a medical examination to ensure they meet the required health standards for the role.

 

Step 6. Final Selection and Appointment:

    • Candidates who successfully complete all stages of the selection process and fulfill all eligibility criteria are selected for the respective government positions.
    • They are then appointed to the positions and are required to undergo training if necessary.
